Throughout the 2016 Abu Dhabi GP weekend, former World Champion Jenson Button hinted that he may not return to Formula One and might race in some other series. Many rumours said that Jenson might race at Le Mans but Rallycross has started to emerge as the clear leader of his future.
After he retired from the Abu Dhabi GP, Button revealed in an interview with David Coulthard and Mark Webber that Jenson and DC were planning to own a rallycross team in the near future. If they did so, it would be obvious that they would drive for their team. This would make up a very exciting lineup for an even more exciting sport.
Jenson’s father, the late John Button was also a rallycross driver in his thirties and hopefully the former might’ve inherited some skills of the sport from ‘Papa Smurf’.
To support the claim that Jenson is planning a full-time move to rallycross, he recently uploaded a picture on social media which showed him driving a Honda Civic Rallycross car at Sebring in the USA.
JB’s move to WRX will be very interesting if indeed it takes place and this would definitely cause a huge shakeup in the championship and increased popularity for the series. Button will not be the first World Champion from another motorsport to move to WRX; he will follow the footsteps of Sebastian Loeb, Mattias Ekström and Petter Solberg into the fast and nail-biting sport.
