A car’s livery is one of the most attention grabbing things in the paddock. Every season, teams change their liveries and often they turn out to be very beautiful. Today I am going to share 8 Formula One liveries from the last 10 years that I find very attractive.
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes: MP4-27 (2012)
Back in 1997, McLaren decided to adopt silver as the primary colour for their liveries, switching from their usual Red and White design. Sadly, that colour scheme was dropped in 2014 but it did produce some really memorable liveries. One example of this was McLaren’s 2012 competitor, the MP4-27. With Vodafone as their title sponsor, the silver and red livery looked fantastic on the design of the car. Yes, an identical livery was run from 2007 to 2013 but the raw design of the MP4-27 suited the livery better than the cars from the other years.
Lotus Renault: E20 (2012)
Renault were rebranded as Lotus in 2011 and they used a livery similar to their classic John Player Special Livery but it had some flashes of red in several places. In 2012 they ran an identical livery which was loved by many. A major factor that made it look better than the previous year’s car was the raw design of the E20. The colours just seemed to blend in with the platypus front wing which was a treat for viewers.
Scuderia Ferrari – F2008 (2008)
Ferrari traditionally produces a red livery and in 2008 they did no different. Instead of light red, Ferrari opted to run a blood red livery. The colours synced in with the aggressive looking design, producing a vicious looking car. The car was stunning, both in terms of performance on track and looks; it won the Italian outfit their last Constructors World Championship till date.
Williams Martini Racing: FW37 (2014)
Williams are a team known to field cars which have their primary colour as blue. In 2014, things changed for the better as Martini decided to sponsor them. They ran a classic white livery with the Matrini stripes flowing through the car. Williams still use that livery for their cars and hopefully this will continue for 2017 too as the cars are very pleasing to watch on a racetrack.
Sahara Force India: VJM06 (2013)
Force India have produced some really good liveries over the years and this one is my personal favourite. The car is painted with features of the Indian flag. The colour orange shines brightly and the green and white perfectly neutralize it. Force India are the only team which has painted their car based on a national flag and this was a really and bold patriotic move by the team’s Indian owner, Dr. Vijay Mallaya. Several Indian fans, including myself were delighted as a car painted like their flag flew around the Buddh International Circuit.
Red Bull Racing: RB12 (2016)
In 2016, Red Bull did something different with their car’s livery. They kept a relatively similar livery design as compared to their previous cars but gave the RB12 a matte finish and removed all white bordering. This made the car stand out for a good reason. The livery was very attractive and was widely praised by many fans around the world. It would be great to see Red Bull use the same livery next year, if not anything better.
Red Bull Racing: RB11 Test Livery (2015)
During the 2015 Winter Testing, Red Bull tested their competitor for the following season, the RB11 under a camouflage livery. This livery was used so that the aerodynamics of the car could be hidden from the other teams. Well, this livery attracted more attention than it should but it served it’s purpose and hid the aerodynamics pretty well (another one of Adrian Newey’s great ideas). In my opinion this is the best livery that Red Bull racing have ever run and it would be an absolute delight if they use the same livery next year. Unfortunately, there are really high chances that this wont happen due to the visibility of the sponsors’ logos.
Brawn GP: BGP001 (2009)
Brawn GP competed in Formula One and left a massive impact, winning both the Drivers and Constructors World Championships in their sole year. Considering looks, the car was superb. A white car with streaks of fluorescent green and a black outline. There were hardly any sponsors on the car which made it look even better. On the inside, the car was superb for Button and Barrichello and on the outside, it was the same for the fans.
And Finally…
Renault Sport F1: RS16 (2016)
Nah, Just Kidding! 😉
