As humans, aren’t we all too fearful of change? Change often leads to old habits being broken; doing things in our arc differently and watching our comfortable surroundings not remain the same anymore can be quite an exasperating experience for many. Just ask your grandparents on what their take on the present day circumstances is! Getting out of our comfort zone can definitely bring about a sense of a rude awakening and in the end, we all end up being guilty of lamenting about change.
Just like everything in life, there can be a more optimistic, more enthusiastic outlook towards changing times too. Many decades ago, people complained about the need for mobile phones and today, they have become one of the few necessities of life! Myopia is a common side-effect of shifting times; the initial inconvenience is considered to be paramount and not the benefits that the future could hold.
The world of Indian motorsport is going through similar, confusing times at the moment. The advent of the revolutionary X1 Racing League has stirred opinions left, right and center. Many purists hold the opinion that Franchise based racing with 30 minute long races is the inappropriate way forward and that there is more to the sport than just making it a show.
Naturally, opinions are never right, nor wrong. We only judge them based on which one gives us the greatest degree of solace. Indeed, Franchised-based racing may not be the purest form of competition but it also is an unexplored territory in motorsport that may just end up being the holy grail that Indian motorsport has been searching for!
Obviously, changing times will bring about its fair share of well-wishers and also those who resist it and the unique idea of the X1 Racing League will see plenty of people falling under the latter category. It would be fair to look at the X1 Racing League like a rebellious, irreverent teenager walking into the room with the vision to change the world. The teenager will create controversy and will have people who adore him for it and those who bemoan his arrival too!
A decade ago, the world of cricket was in a similar scenario, with the IPL being the teenager with a never-seen-before vision. The critics criticized it for not being a pure form of the game and they had a point. But take a look at what the IPL has achieved ever since. Pure or not, it has attracted the masses to the sport with the help of entertainment.
Eventually, these masses fell in love with the sport itself and ended up watching the purer, more traditional format of the game and that is exactly how the sport grows. You only need to join the dots to see how X1 may not diminish the value of the conventional form of the sport, but in fact raise it!
In the end, I personally feel that it is definitely worth a try. We never knew how significant the television or the internet or even the IPL would become when they were initially introduced to the world. However, with great support and perseverance, they have become the world-beaters that we know them as today. Keeping that in mind, it only makes sense to give the X1 Racing League a fair chance to showcase what it offers. Who knows; perhaps it may change the fortunes of Indian motorsport forever just like the IPL changed the fortunes of Indian cricket!
